Event: Song Of Myself Book Signing with Allen Crawford

Whitman Illuminated:
Song Of Myself with Allen Crawford

Walt Whitman’s iconic collection of poems, Leaves of Grass, has earned a reputation as a sacred American text. Whitman himself made such comparisons, going so far as to use biblical verse as a model for his own. So it’s only appropriate that artist and illustrator Allen Crawford has chosen to illuminate—like medieval monks with their own holy scriptures—Whitman’s masterpiece and the core of his poetic vision, “Song of Myself.” Crawford has turned the original sixty-page poem from Whitman’s 1855 edition into a sprawling 234-page work of art. The handwritten text and illustrations intermingle in a way that’s both surprising and wholly in tune with the spirit of the poem—they’re exuberant, rough, and wild. Whitman Illuminated: Song of Myself is a sensational reading experience, an artifact in its own right, and a masterful tribute to the Good Gray Poet.

Illustrator Allen Crawford will share his voyage through Walt Whitman’s poem, "Song of Myself". Crawford will share the context to his approach illustrating the text, detail his relationship and struggle with Whitman’s work, and illuminate his own creative process.

Allen Crawford is an illustrator, designer, and writer. He and his wife Susan are proprietors of the design/illustration studio Plankton Art Co. Their most notable project to date is the collection of 400 species-identification illustrations that are on permanent display at the American Museum of Natural History’s Millstein Hall of Ocean Life. They also created the Rosenbach’s logo! Under the pseudonym Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy , he wrote, designed, and illustrated The Affected Provincial’s Companion, Volume One.

Featured: Rafael Dieste

Rafael Dieste, Tales And Inventions Of Felix Muriel
Paperback
(out of print)

"RAFAEL DIESTE (La Coruna, 1899-1981) began his career writing in the language of his native Galicia, but ended it as a wholly bilingual author and a master of both Galician and Castilian languages. Dieste was a poet, a playwright, and philosopher. Founder, in 1936, of the famous magazine Hora de Espana, he was forced to go into exile at the end of the Civil War. His thorough knowledge of both arts and sciences is deeply ingrained in his writing (he is author of an admirable scientific work, Testamento geometrico), but his understanding of the importance of an accessible style gives his work an apparent ease that partly disguises the perfect fusion of his penetrating mind with his mastery of language."
- from the publisher, Iberia, 1986
